Collecting model trains or miniature versions of railway trains is an interesting hobby, especially for individuals who enjoy assembling and fixing model railways. Compared to toy trains, model trains are more realistic because of their detailed designs, miniature landscapes, layouts and tracks. Model trains appeal to both young and old hobbyists, because assembling and maintaining these collectibles is fairly easy and enjoyable. These trains come in various forms and sizes. Some are even big enough to carry and transport a number of human passengers. From early carpet railways to high-tech model railways with digital controls, model trains have definitely come a long way since their inception during the 18th century.

Because model trains have been attracting the attention of collectors and hobbyists since the 18th century, many companies continue to create high-quality train kits and sets. Some of the well-known brands include Allied, Athearn, Hornby and Bachman.

Allied is a well-known brand of model trains that offers a variety of brass models along with model figures, miniature buildings and other model items and accessories. Hobbyists will also find a variety of international model trains at Allied shops.

A company that was established by model railway hobbyist Irv Athearn, Athearn trains are known for their high-quality items at affordable rates. His development of innovative designs and accessories, such as model trains with a motor shaft that has flywheels, also set the company apart from other manufacturers.

A well-known brand of model trains based in UK, Hornby continues to manufacture high-quality miniature trains and railways. Products offered by Hornby include model trains based on popular characters such as "Thomas the Tank Engine," model figures and model structures.

Bachman has been producing model trains since 1833 and its products are very popular among hobbyists and enthusiasts. This company offers a variety of model trains and kits that are easy to assemble and manage. For beginners or for those who don't want to spend hours assembling tracks, Bachman offers "E-Z Track," a roadbed and track system that easily snaps in place without the need for special tools or base tables.

Most of these well-known manufacturers offer sets or kits based on the popular HO scale. Model trains manufactured based on this scale usually use a 1:87 scale. The 1:87 scale is about half the size of the O scale, earning the nickname of half-zero or HO. One of the reasons why model trains based on this scale are popular worldwide is because hobbyists are able to include more details and scale miles when compared to others of roughly the same size.

Prices of these collectible trains are largely influenced by their age, since older or antique model trains are more expensive. The size and additional accessories can also add to the price since the more detailed the model trains are, the higher their prices are. However, for train enthusiasts, no price is too high for their coveted locomotives.
